About Us

ruplogoTM The Rupanyup Men’s Shed Inc is like many men shed groups and similar associations around the world as we provide a place that men and their partners, carers and even family members can come together to socialise, network, make friends, learn new skills and share all sorts of experiences.

mensheds_logoThe Rupanyup Men’s Shed is an independent organisation and is a member of the Mensheds Australia.

At present, our Men’s Shed Groups meet at various places and at different times, both in the virtual spaces online such as Facebook and privately with functions and activities in public spaces, commercial premises and in members homes.

Typically, our members undertake a wide variety of different activities in our different special interest groups or start their own and most active are the programs that focus on health and wellbeing.

For example, we have a walking for health, dog walking and training group, a swimming group, woodcrafts, photography or camera club, computers and internet, carers support group, men’s health forums and other activities.

A Men’s Shed can also be a safe space where our members feel confident in gathering in a gender friendly environment that encourages discussion and sharing of information and we are all for providing the opportunities to learn more.

Our Men’s Shed’s Purposes and Objectives

• To provide a venue for on-going social interaction among members;
• To develop a range of activities in which all members can participate;
• To develop and run programs that will contribute to better health and well-being of the members;
• To conduct a well managed and well operated community based men’s shed;
• To build the sustainability of the men’s shed;
• To undertake community development;
• To organise mentoring and social opportunities;
• To recognise and support the role of carers and partners of the members.

The objectives of the Shed are to advance the health and well-being of our members by providing a safe and happy environment where skilled and unskilled men can, in the company of other men,

(a) Pursue hobbies, pastimes and interests
(b) Learn new skills, practice and pass on old skills
(c) Learn about their own and other men’s health and well-being
(d) By their efforts, contribute to their families, their friends, the Shed and their community
(e) Mentor younger men
(f) Mentor disadvantaged men

Men’s sheds have been established for a range of reasons and at the heart of it all lies some common interests that are often shared, and more often involve activities built around physical work, arts, crafts, humanities and technical skills such as computers, photography or even the the kind of things done that are also done in the common backyard shed.

Rather than work on those interests alone, a community shed introduces a way for social interaction to grow among the participants that is an important part of well being.

The interest of the group commonly develops from that shared core belief and individual interests and then mixed with copious mugs of hot coffee and maybe even a or two pizza to expand the range of things that they can all do as a project.

Men’s sheds are not all the same and the Rupanyup Men’s Shed is really different from most as we focus mainly on out of shed programs, often run online using the internet and with topics that do not often involve tools.

Our shed supports the involvement of Partners and Carers of Men as well as engaging with local youth for many of the groups and clubs we run.

The character and operations of the shed are a reflection of our niche groups working in this community.

That niche we bring has positive elements including:

  • The fostering for improvement and sharing of skills, experience and capacities with our members;
  • The physical, financial and other resources that we can build and have available;
  • The needs and opportunities that we can explore and develop for others that don’t yet exist in the community.

Men’s sheds are a particular kind of social enterprise in as much that they operate much like any other not for profit enterprise, working to achieve defined objectives that are both social and financial.

The financial outcomes are designed to support the pursuit of larger social objectives, making the key difference from other enterprises that pursue objectives to benefit the enterprise owners.
